Summary/Abstract: This article comments on the respective works of several “mavericks” rocking now and then the world of the opera and dance/ballet staging – namely Andrei Şerban, Guy Joosten, Damiano Michieletto, Matthew Bourne. As different as they may be in various aspects (such as artistic personality type, cultural background, creative potential, personal and professional motivation – as well as prestige), all these directors still have something (very special) in common (apart from their being unconventional): a constant – an almost obsessional – interest in shaping the opera/ballet shows they stage as multifaceted and theatrically accomplished representations. Their (sometimes radical) option for the challenge strategy pays off: it may well singularize them as risk takers, but it definitely (and significantly) appeals to all those willing to get a glimpse of the essential truth of life by means of theatre as a supreme form of art, as an ideal form of interpersonal communication.
