Summary/Abstract: My essay focuses on two recent productions (both dating from 2006) of Caragiale’s most famous plays. Tompa Gábor reworks A Lost Letter into a vivid cabaret-like show, a sparkling and disturbing “monster” which reunites realism and postmodernism and challenges all commun representations of past vs. present, men vs. women, person vs. society, morals vs. politics, beauty vs. ugliness, good vs. evil. Meanwhile, Adi Afteni delivers A Stormy Night devoid of words, where exaggerated mimic and gestures supplant the verbal function of language, where all the events are decomposed in three series of reflexes displayed on different scenic levels, thus reminding that “all the world’s a stage”, that life is an illusion, after all.
