Summary/Abstract: As a consequence of the accession to the European Union (EU), the health status and the health services from the other EU Member States became the reference framework for comparison for the population of Romania. Following this premises, the presidential Commission for the policy analysis and design in the field of public health finds that Romania has one of the worst health indicators from EU, and one of the least efficient health systems in the region with direct impact on the health outcomes of the population. Six strategic areas for intervention are identified, in order to improve the situation and a set of 19 measures are proposed, based on four major principles: equity, quality, responsiveness and focus on patients and citizens needs.
