Summary/Abstract: The article opens by posing the question whether and to what extent one can speak of specifically “German” forms of violence. In a search for answers, selected aspects of German- language reflections on violence in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries are examined. An analysis of the major topics in contemporary German studies on violence (Gewaltforschung) is enriched with observations about two films by Michael Haneke – White Ribbon and Funny Games.
