Summary/Abstract: How do certain firms become dominant actors ofa cluster? To investigate the above question, wemapped the knowledge network from micro-levelrelational data collected by a roster recall methodquestionnaire on the printing and paper productindustry in Kecskemét urban settlements group,Hungary. Additional data collected from companyregistration records and structured face-to-faceinterviews allow us to present a detailed view onthe geographical and historical aspects of networkformation. By identifying the structurally centralnodes in the network we found that it is not thebig companies, but rather the small spin-off firmsthat are the core players in the knowledge networkof the cluster. Our case study demonstrates thatknowledge sharing across firms is much moreintensive when geographical proximity iscombined with common history of firms, thesetogether determine the emergence of the mostinfluential actors in the cluster network.
