Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with the notion of grammatical elements of language (as opposed to lexical elements). Two conceptions of grammaticity are distinguished: the one concentrating on content and the one concentrating both on content and on expression (i.e., concentrating on signs). Further, the concept of grammaticalization formulated by Christian Lehmann is compared with that developed in Prague School typology. In conclusion, a few remarks are made on the relationship between grammaticalization theory and the general linguistic method.
