Summary/Abstract: Innovativeness – the propensity to create and commercialize new products and services – gives a positive connotation in present-day economics. After all, successful innovators stand behind improved corporate, sectoral and macroeconomic competitiveness. Nonetheless, in several contemporary financial sectors, innovation has assumed a peculiar twist: besides higher functionality of asset usage (including flexible risk management) it has triggered serious macroeconomic and social imbalances. In Poland, the nascent stage of financial sector growth, high capital adequacy of most financial institutions as well as relative effectiveness of financial supervision, coupled with exemplary macroeconomic resilience throughout the global economic crisis of 2007–2009, have contributed to overall systemic stability. One can thus argue that the social utility of innovation undertaken in the Polish financial services sector in 2007–2009 has been commendable.
