Summary/Abstract: The problem of subjective aspect of pathology and the problem of its application in medical practices is analyzed in the context of the discussion about further development of medicine and medicalization of life. In this article the main distinctions between pain and suffering, disease as natural phenomenon and illness as real human experience are made. Different contexts of the discussion about the meaning of illness are pointed out. The emphasis is made on chronic illness medicine and the role of this problem for chronic pathologies which have become part of patient’s life world. Basic methodological collision between „culturological“ and „personolized“ strategies of the analysis of meanings of illness are described.
