Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to delineate essential characters of a modern world-view attitude known as aestheticism. It is shown to derive, historically and systematically, from the German Idealism (Kant – Hegel) and Romanticism in their attemps at coming to terms with their own contemporaneity. It sets itself the main task to explore how really desisively relevant the prominent Kantian and/or Neo-Kantian conception of ‘as if’ becomes for understanding the intellectual foundations both of the aestheticism as a world-view attitude and of the ‘aestheticization processes’ pervading our culture.
