L’affaire Castellucci

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the controversial and hostile reception of Romeo Castellucci’s O twarzy (On the Face. Regarding the Son of God) which was severely criticized by various catholic circles in Europe. The article focuses particularly on the attempted disruption of the performance in Paris and on other attempts to stop the presentation of the production carried out either by religious organisations or individual people. Since the scale and volume of protests were unprecedented, the author of the article pays special attention on the social dimension and influence of the production on the Paris audiences. Its reception in other regional theatres both in France and in Europe is also taken into account. The social and cultural benefits and costs of these protests are being analysed and assessed.
