Summary/Abstract: Ágnes Bakk and Eszter Vági analyse the appointment of the new director of the Hungarian National Theatre (2012/13). The arrival of the new director, Attila Vidnyánszky, triggered a variety of social and political activities involving theatre audience. Scandal and animosity were the talk of the day. Digging back into the history of the national theatre and its development over the years the authors of the article explain the strong relation between the concept of the national theatre and the idea of national identity. The article also attempts to question the strong bonding of the two ideas.
