Summary/Abstract: In the paper the author tries to find the real background of the Italian politics. On the base of Ernesto Galli della Loggia’s book on national identity, the author identifies four decisive factors determinating the Italian political activities: the geopolitical situation, the historical and religious tradition, the importance of the family and the existence of the local oligarchy. The consequence of this specific situation is that in Italy the State is weak and the civil society is strong. The Italian political culture is colourful and it causes the complexity of the party system. So, we can also assist at the process of the transformation of the party system after 1992. This specific situation increases the previous anomalies (the so-called transformism, governmental instability and economic stability etc.) of the Italian Second Republic.
