Summary/Abstract: Achim von Arnim’s and Clemens Brentano’s romantic ballad “Rewelge”/”Awakening” is a very well known song of war of popular origin that intermingles the sacred and the profane. Through a divine intervention that makes possible the resurrection of all the soldiers who have fallen on the battlefield, resurrection that allows them to change an imminent defeat into a dazzling triumph, the defence of their motherland acquires, in the German romantic imaginative universe of the murky chapter in history 1806-1808, a supernatural dimension, that of a sacred duty.
