Summary/Abstract: The fact that there are no Yugoslavs in Yugoslavia but Croats, Serbs, etc., and that there is an area called Kosovo, is now well-known even to politically not particularly interestedpeople, and it has almost become a commonplace that this country is in a deep crisis. It is. however, not a simple crisis, comparable to those in other post-communist countries. While Yugoslavia has serious economic and political Problems too, it is also by itself a real problem for both the inhabitants of the country and foreign observers. It is not enough to ask what is going on in Yugoslavia and how to find a way out. Uncertainties arise much earlier, namely in the determination of what has come into a crisis: Is there still a Yugoslavia at all, what was it and when did it arise?
