Summary/Abstract: On the one hand, the question arises as to how far the Communists have succeeded in destroy-ing the European character of this Hungarian society, and, on the other hand, how far Hungary is able to revive it. Elsewhere, I have analyzed this development in detail, in the course of which the institutions of democracy and the market economy were destroyed in the late 1940s, and since the middle of the sixties they have partially recovered. In this article, I will focus on the value sys-tem of Hungarian society. I would like to examine the extent to which three fundamental Europe-an values - individualism, entrepreneurial spirit and pluralism - were destroyed by the communist regime in the late forties and fifties, and how far they have revived since the mid-sixties and par-ticularly in recent years.
