Summary/Abstract: It should be noted that the collapse of an authoritarian regime can be reversed, as it has been done in 1968 in Czechoslovakia, in 1974 in Brazil or in 1981 in Poland. Or lead to a new dictatorship, such as in Iran. And even if the end result of transitions is not the old or a new dictatorship, they can somehow get stuck in non-competitive forms of government that restrict political debate or face the organized threat of military intervention. And even if democracy is finally established, it does not have to be stable: it is conceivable that democratic institutions can systematically produce results that cause certain political forces to opt for authoritarianism. So stable democracy is only one of several possible results of the breakdown of authoritarian regimes.
