Summary/Abstract: The article introduces the topic of fan culture associated with manga, anime and Japanese games. A characteristic feature of otaku fandom is the hybrid market model that accompanies it, in which professional production exists side-by-side with the work of amateurs. The author presents the genesis of the founding and rise of the otaku community in the United States, describes the reasons that contributed to the rapid development of fan activities that have been labelled piracy. In the case of otaku culture, piracy is distinctive and intriguing, as it is one of the cornerstones of its existence. The article includes the contemporary state of research on manga and anime fandom.
