Characteristics and Limitations of Language Proficiency Tests

Summary/Abstract: Assessment of foreign language proficiency must be done through reliable tests based on realistic communication tasks which allow candidates to perform to the best of their abilities. This paper aims to present the main characteristics as well as limitations of tests administered to students or candidates during formal examinations of their foreign language proficiency. While such test attributes as validity and reliability are routinely considered by professionals when selecting and administering a language test, there are other principles such as transferability and authenticity which should be taken into account, especially in the case of tests of languages for specific purposes, in order to ensure relevance and accuracy of measurement.
