Summary/Abstract: A common motive of Central European political movements, as diverse as they were, was the struggle for cultural autonomy. Their exaggerated anxiety about cultural autonomy and tradition reveals a deficit of autonomy and tradition in these societies. Cultural difference conceived as diversity means heteronomy, lack of complexity, an incoherent process of consecutive expropriations instead of appropriation.
