Summary/Abstract: The changing aims and effects of war. Europeans, who today are around fifty years old, undoubtedly view the era in which they have lived as one of unprecedented peace and stability. Politicians have worked hard to convince them of this. Many still believe that the system of two political blocs, each keeping the other in check, guaranteed them a tranquil life. Following the disintegration of the Warsaw Pact, diplomats on both sides often privately complain that their life was a lot simpler during the Cold War. Should we consider ourselves lucky?
