Summary/Abstract: The article describes the link between the theory of evolution and the Polish 19th-century novel from the point of view of the mimetic conflict between Darwin's narration and novelistic realism. The author divides the early reception of Darwin's theory into 4 stages: ambivalence, repression, latency, and painful narcissism. The last stage is a consequence of realizing that the knowledge about evolution can only be expressed through a narrative form of a novel. Realistic prose discovers that while science may triumph in the sphere of principles, the explanation of those principles requires a certain form of literature.
