The characteristics of syntactic structures of Croatian language conversational style

Summary/Abstract: Conversational style has been seen as one of the functional styles of standard language which as such shows special features in relation to other styles. In addition to phonological, morphological and lexical characteristics, conversational style will be distinguished by special features of syntactic structures. This paper will give an overview of “conversational” syntax. Particularly, replica exchange speed, casualty of everyday communication will result in abundance of elliptical sentences, and the content simplicity in simple sentences. Conversational style will avoid complex sentence structures, and if they are recorded, it will favour compound sentences in relation to complex sentences. This paper represents part of a broader research.
