The Romanian vocabulary about marriage – ethimological observations

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the etymology of the most important Romanian matrimonial terms, such as: ‘to get engaged’, ‘engagement’, ‘fiancé’, ‘groom’, ‘bride’, ‘to get married’, ‘marriage’, ‘wedding’, ‘husband’, ‘wife’, ‘wedding’. It examines the etymons that were already proposed, trying to indicate the most probable one, and also offers new explanations. We discuss the mutual semantic relations not only between the terms and their etymons but also between the terms themselves. The analysis is carried out both from the synchronic and the diachronic point of view, giving the earliest written attestations of the terms and describing the evolution of their meanings. It demonstrates that the nucleus of this terminology was inherited from Latin, but some foreign borrowings have contributed to the further delimitation of the senses.
