Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the role of war in the development of Society and State, as it is presented in the First Book of the Social Contract. The starting point is Hobbes’ philosophy, which asserts that mankind has two different existential states: a natural or primitive state in which there are no laws, and a social state, characterized by the emergence of society and state, dominated by Montesquieu’s “spirit of the laws”. Rousseau asserted that in the primitive state people felt insecure because their life and belongings were threatened. Such a state is characterized by “the war of all against all”. In this state, the need for security determines reason to choose peace, which is followed by the emergence of society and state. These appear because people sign a social pact or contract. Through this contract, the individual decides to abide the laws of the state, whereas the state decides to ensure the integrity of individual’s physical and psychological life.
