Summary/Abstract: Subject of analysis is the drawing of institutional characteristics of the arts, which build up "the world of the arts" and determine the respective infrastructure necessary for the functioning of the visual arts. Traced here is the development and dynamic transformation of the institutional framework during the 90s of the 20th century. By the end of the 80s the artistic space continued to depend on an external normative system, the total centralization in the sphere of management of culture, as well as the principles of ignoring new forms in state cultural institutions. The 90s were a period of exceptional complexity, dynamism and contradictions characterized by certain political and social dimensions, at the same time non-homogenous in its internal development. During the decade new artistic organizations and cultural institutions emerged. The main need was the absence of long-term functioning institutions - the main characteristic of contemporary Bulgarian art, and awareness of their significance, as well as the main need to adhere to the ideas of world processes. This article raises the questions of the institutional realization of new trends in fine arts from the point of view of contemporary Bulgarian art. The analysis shows it is not simple phenomenon. This is how the main conclusion is drawn, that institutional dimensions of Bulgarian art are a considerable subject of study and that contemporary art should be seen as an overall socio-cultural mechanism.
