Summary/Abstract: Strangely, hardly any topic is as shrouded in conjecture as is the break-up of Czechoslovakia at the end of 1992 and the beginning of 1993. In the years 1990 – 1992, the break-up of the state was primarily an ideological theme, spilling into economic issues as well. Arguments based on public opinion were rarely heard, and if so, then few paid any attention at all. In fact, the study conducted by the public research institute STEM analyzing the break-up of Czechoslovakia was paid for by STEM itself, due to a lack of central financial resources. In other words, neither the media nor any institute expressed an interest in such a survey! Perhaps this wasn’t simply due to the fact that the topic was “uninteresting“; it may also have been indicative of people having a bad conscience.
