Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the results of empirical studies and is an attempt to reflect on the need for media education in schools in the process of building a knowledge society. Opinions of school principals and young people from upper secondary schools in the Silesian Voivodship confirm the discrepancy in terms of willingness, opportunities and real implementation of media education. The search for the appropriate form of media education continues on the grounds of Polish and European education.
