Summary/Abstract: This text is a result of the studies carried out over the question of children’s perception of visual messages that accounts for visual complementation and description of the contents of printed text. Reflections on the contemporary art of illustration and values of the visual images in the shape of book illustration constitute for the first part of the article. In the second, essential trends in pre‑reader stage children’s preferences for the visual work/book illustration in terms of fields of implementation and the visual quality in the shape of abstractness, seen as the dominant of the imaging referred to the image plan is presented. The article ends with the final reflections directed towards the question of the quality and the value of children’s remarks.
