Summary/Abstract: The author analyzes Aristotle’s Poetics, underlining that it is a difficult work that requires a range of cognitive skills of its readers, but on the other hand, that the knowledge it contains is a sine qua non condition in the work of historian or art theorist. He recalls Aristotle’s views on the problem of essence and reasons of art as a being, the ontic status of artefact, and the criteria of artistic creativity. He studies the nature of tragedy, comedy, and comedy’s katharsis. The author bases on the analogy applied by Aristotle, recalls Aristotle’s theory of art, and – following the interpretation given by M. A. Krąpiec – presents realistic anthropology completed by the anthropology of theater. The author notices that this Aristotle’s work is not only a respectable mental relic of the past, but a proverbial „mine” of knowledge about art, even though it belongs to isagogic letters (elementary lectures) and did not survive in whole.
