Summary/Abstract: The problem of universals is one of the most complex and difficult topics in metaphysics. It has had a long history during which many philosophers have tried to solve it. The basic solution, according to the author, can be found in the metaphysics of St. Thomas Aquinas. The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, the author examines Thomas’s solution and additional refinements that have been added to it by other thinkers in order to present an improved Thomistic solution. In the second part, he clarifies how the Thomistic solution examined in the first part provides an objective foundation for philosophy, science, and human knowledge in general. To do this, he employs a schema based upon the medieval way of discussing relations.
