Summary/Abstract: According to the previous scholarly literature, late in March 1514 a long debate in the royal council was occasioned by the papal bull whereby cardinal Thomas Bakócz, archbishop of Esztergom, had been authorised in Rome to launch a crusade against the Ottomans. By the end of the debate the view of Bakócz had supposedly won the day, and, consequently, the bull was solemnly proclaimed at Buda on 9 April. This picture, however, is considerably nuanced by the author of the present study. He argues, on the basis of newly revealed charter material from March and April 1514, that a general assembly (parliament) convened then at the traditional venue on the Field of Rákos. This dieta started on 19 March and was closed sometime after 5 April but before 9 April. During the assembly, several matters concerning the logistical background of the planned campaign were decided on. On the basis of the new evidence it can be stated with certainty that the king summoned a general assembly for the time when the archbishop returned, in order precisely to discuss the proclamation of the papal bull the prelate had taken home.
