Summary/Abstract: The work of Hayao Miyazaki, a master of animation, is a fascinating example of Japanese cinema inspired by Western culture. An indication of this in his work is placing the action of his films both in Japan and Europe. One notes in them influences of German romanticism (including Wagner's operas), folk tales and European literature for children, as well as early animated cartoons. In Miyazaki's films they come together with Japanese motifs, bridging the gap between East and West. Thanks to the mechanisms of mass culture these remarkable works gain popularity around the world
