Summary/Abstract: The elimination of economic and cultural retardation and the successful integration into the family of European countries were essential for the young Lithuanian state. A great lack of specialists in various areas and the absence of a university caused the beginning of national scholarships for studies abroad in 1919. Scholarships for studies abroad were provided during the whole Independence period. National scholars played an important role in the process of state building: they were the “source of knowledge” and the active element of society. France was considered to be the centre of high culture. The popularity of the French culture was growing and reached its peak in the 1930s. The influence of the French culture was especially felt in Kaunas, the temporary capital of Lithuania. French universities and academies attracted a number of Lithuanian students. The aim of the present article is to discuss the life of Lithuanian students in France from a historical perspective, to reveal the challenges that they faced, and to highlight the relation of students with their homeland during the years of studies and later.
