Summary/Abstract: The text offers excerpts from the travel notes of Italian count Angelo de Gubernatis entitled “Bulgaria and the Bulgarians (Travel notes and studies)” written in French and published in Florence in 1899. The first part accounts the author’s impressions of Sofia University and a personal meeting with Ivan Vazov, who was at the time Minister for Public Education. The second part is dedicated to the newly built Alexandrovska Hospital. Throughout the text the author makes interesting observations of the nature of the Bulgarians and the political tensions of the time.
