Old Sofia: The Prison and the Intellectuals

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the Bulgarian prison in the period shortly after the Liberation of Bulgaria focusing on the prison known as The Black Mosque into which the religious school on the premises of the mosque was converted. The text analyzes the prison not only as a place of limitation and lack of freedom, but also as a meeting point of the political and cultural memory of the building of the young Bulgarian state during the period from 1879 to 1911. Various memoirs and works of fiction are discussed accordingly.
