Summary/Abstract: The article recalls the Polesian works of Jo´ zef Obre˛bski, a well-known Polish ethnologist who studied the Polish Eastern Borderlands (more specifically: Polesie) in the 1830’s. His view conflicts with the stereotypical picture of the Borderlands established in literary texts. For Obre˛bski the Borderlands were a space of social, national, and religious conflicts between the landowning classes and the peasantry, between shocking poverty and excessive wealth, between Polish identity and the mentality of Belarusian “mużyk”.
