The Accent Differences of Some Word Endings in the Prienai Subdialect: Instrumental and Auditory Research

Summary/Abstract: In the Prienai subdialect as well as in other Aukštaitian subdialects, circumflex syllablesare used more often than acute ones, the circumflex is considered the unmarked member inthe accent opposition. The circumflex is also more usual at word-final positions, but the acuteis encountered more often in this position in comparison with Standard Lithuanian. Althoughstressed syllables in word-final positions are realised more frequently with the circumflexaccent, not in all the cases is this accent pronounced in an identical way, e.g. the perceivedvariations are laikα. ʽtimesʼ (N. Nom. Pl.), sakα. ʽtree gumʼ (N. Nom. Pl.), vs. laika. (/laikài)ʽyou are holdingʼ (V. 2nd. Pres.), saka. (/sakài) ʽyou are sayingʼ (V. 2nd. Pres.) and the like.The accent differences of such word endings is also indicated in the subdialect of Prienaiby the general duration of the diphthongs and the quantity and quality of the first component,as well as the fundamental frequency and intensity. According to the data received from theauditory experiment, the forms discussed here are also reliably distinguished by auditors –experiment participants. This indicates that the compared word forms do not yet totally coincidein the subdialect.
