Summary/Abstract: The most provocative novel in contemporary Lithuanian literature, Darkness and Partnersby Sigitas Parulskis (2012) seeks to find the answer to question what led to the participationof Lithuanians in the massacre of Jews during the war. The article aims to translate figurativelanguage of the novel into discourse of concepts by establishing logics of fictional interaction andstructure of meanings. It attempts to analyse the layer of the novel encompassing religion’s realm, which appears mysterious to the author himself, especially focusing on quotations from the Bibleand personages duplicating characters of the New Testament in the sense that names and storiesare repeated. The textual analysis results in revealing of predisposition that is not articulateddirectly by the text, namely that anti-Semitism is inseparable from ethically non-binding faithand collective identity typical for infantile culture. Intensive exploitation of religious imagerycould be assumed to be a communication strategy to activate readers, while its strongest effectis the feeling of disgust.
