Summary/Abstract: Jean Vanier is known as an outstanding thinker and the founder of the community “L'Arche”. In his writings for many years he has been sketching foundations and principles of creating truly supportive and developing communities of people with intellectual disabilities, their assistants and friends. In recent years a growing interest in his writings can be observed in the context of their use in education of children, young people and adults who want to learn how to create different types of communities: family, friendship, professional communities. The purpose of this article is to present the importance of Jean Vanier's thought in the context of the possibility of its use in the process of building the family as a community of people. Many of the principles formulated by him can be a starting point for programs and strategies preparing parents and their children to built truly supportive family communities.
