Network approach – towards a new paradigm in management science?

Summary/Abstract: Scientific discipline of management has relatively short history and is in pre-paradigmatic phase of development. In this phase of the discipline one can observe lack of methodological certainty of the inquiry due to the presence of competing theories that are not compatible to each other. The goal of this article was to present characteristic assumptions of the network approach, which grows dynamically in popularity in organization science. It is grounded in belief that relationships among humans, organizations and other objects of interests are not random, and observed patterns have consequences that could be regarded as opportunities or constrains to linked actors. Network flows are grounded in relationships that facilitate transfers of resources and information in the network. The author presents a critical view on chances that network approach will bring revolution to the management discipline and become the dominant, accepted paradigm in the field.
