Summary/Abstract: Legitimacy is one of the social characteristics attributed to individuals and organizations; and legitimacy theory has arisen as one of the theoretical constructs to be applied in the field of management sciences. Legitimacy is still relatively rarely used in empirical research conducted in Poland. The aim of the article is to recognize the research gap and to present the opportunities of using the legitimacy theory in empirical research on management systems of Polish universities. The paper demonstrates the concept of legitimacy as well as describes the theory of legitimacy and its application in previous studies. The discussion presented is aimed at the identification of potential future directions of empirical research on the impact of legitimacy on the development of management systems in Polish universities. The study is theoretical and is based on the literature review.
