Summary/Abstract: The development of social sciences knowledge has had a growing impact upon social consciousness. The question is how a competent and responsive public society – and not only some of its members – will use it. Controversies linked to methodological debates reveal differences in views on legitimate research activities, which in turn translate into diversified knowledge. Heterogeneous resources of social sciences knowledge used sensibly – in the Author’s opinion – would create scope for positive expression of civic attitudes and qualities, broaden the horizons of thought and action, leading people to become independent, competent and responsible members of society.
