Summary/Abstract: The literary work of Gabriel L (1928–1998), a cosmopolitan journalist, satirist and aphorist, was strongly infl uenced by Jewish, Polish, Czech and German history, culture and mentality. The paper presents life and literary activity of Gabriel L, a witness of turbulent history, violent political transformation and dynamic social changes in Central and Eastern Europe of the 20th century. L, raised in a multi-ethnic environment, strongly criticized totalitarian systems and any violation of civil rights and liberties. L’s observations and ironic comments on historical issues and condition of his contemporaries are brilliantly conveyed especially in his aphorisms.
