Summary/Abstract: The literary work of Gabriel L􀵺􀶎􀵻 (1928–1998), a cosmopolitan journalist, satirist and aphorist, was strongly infl uenced by Jewish, Polish, Czech and German history, culture and mentality. The paper presents life and literary activity of Gabriel L􀵺􀶎􀵻, a witness of turbulent history, violent political transformation and dynamic social changes in Central and Eastern Europe of the 20th century. L􀵺􀶎􀵻, raised in a multi-ethnic environment, strongly criticized totalitarian systems and any violation of civil rights and liberties. L􀵺􀶎􀵻’s observations and ironic comments on historical issues and condition of his contemporaries are brilliantly conveyed especially in his aphorisms.
