Summary/Abstract: Ludwig B, a Croatian writer of German origin, is the preeminent author of neo-historical novels in contemporary Croatian literature. B situates his prose in the Central European geohistorical setting – his stories are constructed against the backdrop of the offi cial history of the twentieth century, following German characters in the Slavic environment, exploring connections with the experiences of Czechs and Germans in Prague, and validating both positive and negative Slavic stereotypes of Germans. An autobiographical aspect to B’s novels hints at a social engagement that is refl ected in both his fi ction and non-fi ction. The fi ctional authenticity and realism of B’s novelistic settings is supported by protagonists from the real literary milieu – like the presence of H, F, K or S in the Prague chapters of B’s life and his neo-historical novels.
