Summary/Abstract: The text compares two literary works: the work of the Slovak author Monika K􀶈􀶆􀶉􀵺􀶇􀶧􀶄􀶈􀶏􀶜 The Fifth Boat (2010) and the work of the Swiss author Aglaja V􀵾􀶍􀵾􀶋􀵺􀶇􀶒􀶂 Why the Child is Cooking in the Polenta (1999). The article focuses on the theme of solitude of two growing up protagonists of these novels. The relationship between mother and daughter is suggested as the fi rst key moment for experiencing and development of solitude. This relationship is insuffi cient and defective in both compared novels. The second key moment is the theme of space (in the form of real space as well as in the form of fi ctitious space) in which the solitude of the main characters is constructed. I suggest the space as a determining factor in a sense of correspondence and mutual dependence between characters and space.
