Summary/Abstract: The objective of the paper is the establishment of a common semantic invariant of the Balkan aorist (Bulgarian, Greek and Albanian). To this end, in the first part the general conceptual framework and terminology are introduced. The theoretical framework is based on enunciative theory (théorie de l’énonciation). In part two some basic notions are defined, such as event (which is opposed to those of state and process), interval (open, closed and semi-closed), temporal reference point (repère temporel), and temporal reference. The basic characteristics of the aorist, unquestioningly assumed in traditional grammar and even in some contemporary linguistic research on the three languages, are challenged. Part three reviews the gnomic meaning of the aorist and its use for future time reference.
