Summary/Abstract: Solitude, whether inflicted or desired, is a polysemous notion admitting a plurality of meanings. Neither seclusion nor withdrawal, it is subjected to representations that determinate solitude in a conditional or purposeful manner. Such approaches placing it in a mediating position are so many counter-examples of its radical character. From nature solitude seems constitutive of any individual as of any subject
