Summary/Abstract: Rilke found in the experience of loneliness the key to a deeper understanding of life itself. In his Letters to a young poet he develop a theory on how to give meaning to an otherwise unpleasant feeling, on how to find in the most difficult situation the roots to the greatest joy of the soul. On one hand Rilke deplore the poor loneliness in which the inhabitants of the modern great cities live in distress, on the other hand he sees in loneliness a chance for each of us to become what we really are, far from the meaningless noise of the exterior world. Rilke engages us in an introspective path where every single little thing of everyday life acquires a priceless value. Not the least, the loneliness appears to Rilke the best preparation for the greatest moment of everyone’s life, the experience of love.
