Summary/Abstract: Similarities and divergencies between time and space in folktales and time and space on the movie screen present the main point of discussion. The comparison is based on the main cultural dichotomy of poetics and technology. Within these frames the author considers the amazing property of the folktale consciousness to set up the problems of technology by way of the fantasied devices of poetics, on the one hand, and the striking property of the movie to pose and solve in part some poetic tasks using the technological devices. Folktale consciousness is set through the poetic channel within the context of everything being possible and permissible, whereas movie consciousness sets itself by way of technology within the context of super-possible and incredible phenomena. Hence the formula of fiction to be found both in the folktale and the movie presents a particular interest. With folktales, this “is pure fiction”, as the folktale essentially is a norm and the absolute of fiction in general. As far as movies go, fiction is set within the cultural context of time within the range of its own relative values. But both the tale and the movie are a peculiar synthesis; of real and unreal, an amalgam of truth and fiction. This, of course, does not mean that the tale should be viewed as an “archaic movie”, or the movie be thought of as a modern version of a once-upon-a-time tale. The tale and the movie are essentially two stages from the artistic evolution of our civilization, from the process of its realization as an object, but also a product of man’s creative endeavour.
