Summary/Abstract: Following Jürgen Habermas’ reflections on the transitional character of modernity, Luigi Nono could be identified as a par excellence modern composer, since his oeuvre includes a variety of transitional figures – on several levels and dimensions. The present study surveys Nono’s work according to these figures, among of them we can find the figure of the avantgard, the progression, the revolution, the rites de passage (van Gennep), the interval (as a passage between two notes), and finally the musical intonation itself, which enhances the genuin transitional quality of music. It could be experienced in the late Luigi Nono’s work, that music comes from and returns to silence. It is the music’s genuin ’liminality’ (V. Turner).
